MUSEUMS
AND MONUMENTS: |
|
|
St.Stephen’s cathedral,
religious symbol of Vienna, appears
like a stately building in Gothic
style.
The powerful north tower, which
is dominated by the Steffi on
its peak, characterizes the landscape
with its 136 metres high, instead
the south tower has the biggest
bell of the city. It is also interesting
to see the catacombs. Among all
the religious buildings of the
city it is advisable to visit
the gothic St.Micheal‘s
cathedral (Michaelkirche): inside
the catacombs there are many mummified
corps in painted coffins.

Very interesting also the capuchine’s
church (kapuzinerkirche), which
contains in its Baroque interior
the ashes of many Habsburg members.
The most important civil buildings
are those that are situated in the
Ring, a six kilometres long Ring
builded by Francesco Giuseppe, which
surrounds the city and preserves
the main symbols of the glorious
past of this city.
Not only the Hofburg is beautiful
to see with its imperial apartments
and the silverware museum which
was in the past the sumptuous imperial
residence and now has become the
presidential one but also the great
city hall (Rathaus), a new gotic
building with a hundred meters high
tower, and the parliament which
is inspired to a classic greek architecture
and preceeded by a corinthian colonnade. The
Staatsoper, which is one of the
most important Renaissance theatre
in the world, holds a prestigious
position in the monumental structure
of the city because it was the first
building completed in the Ring,
rebuilded after the ruins of second
world war. Even if the city has
a great cultural property, it isn’t
to forget the remarkable presence
of museums, which offers to the
tourists works of world wide renown. |
